Our Story
Wild Roots Gardens is the passion project of husband-and-wife team Matthew and Misty Olson. As lifelong learners and avid home gardeners, they share a deep connection to nature. Their journey has been shaped by a growing understanding of the importance and impact of native planting. They also have a deep love of food fresh from the garden. Through Wild Roots Gardens, they seek to create a more beautiful world while building a rewarding way to live and work together. Matthew and Misty believe that sustainable urban gardening is accessible to everyone, and they are eager to show how, together, we can all make a difference.
Where It All Began
Wild Roots Gardens took root at home, just blocks from historic downtown Niles, Michigan, in the Olsons' backyard. As the gardens continue to flourish, their coaching services will expand to offer a range of deliverables, including raised beds, live plants, home composting supplies, installations, tours, and classes. The Olsons are confident that their efforts will make a lasting difference in their community.
Our Approach
Wild Roots Gardens utilizes natural ecosystems and approaches gardening as a series of interconnected systems, yielding numerous benefits. Native plants play a vital role by providing essential food and breeding grounds for beneficial insects. Because these plants are adapted to the local soil and weather conditions, they require fewer resources to thrive. Their presence also draws crucial pollinators to the garden. By growing crops in patterns that mimic wild growth, Wild Roots Gardens creates a low-maintenance permaculture system that thrives abundantly with minimal waste.
Commitment to Inclusivity
Wild Roots Gardens is dedicated to employing individuals with neurodiversity and disabilities, inspired by the Olsons' own family experience. They are committed to fostering safe and supportive work environments for all team members.
